Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt is developing the AkvaCity building in Itäharju, which will be leased by Turun Vesihuolto Oy. The building's foundation stone was laid on Thursday, October 3rd, and the same event marked the building's topping-out ceremony.
At the joint foundation stone laying and topping-out ceremony held on Thursday, October 3rd, speeches were given by Miika Tuominen, Development Director at Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt, Mika Maaskola, Chair of the Turku City Council, Irina Nordman, CEO of Turun Vesihuolto, and Petri Reunanen from the construction company Jatke Länsi-Suomi. The site personnel did not wish to speak on this occasion.
In his speech, Miika Tuominen, Development Director at Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt, emphasized the building's environmental values.
– The first wooden building by Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt is finally under construction. The main building material of AkvaCity is strong, eco-friendly Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), which consists of cross-glued wood layers.
In his speech, Mika Maaskola, Chair of the Turku City Council, highlighted the city's future development in the Science Park and Itäharju areas.
– The AkvaCity building is beautiful and modern, and it serves as a great flagship for the area. Just like Turku Energia, Turun Vesihuolto acts as an excellent example for other companies considering locations for new premises.
The AkvaCity building is beautiful and modern, and it serves perfectly as the area's flagship.
Turun Vesihuolto has long traditions in Halinen, which was also highlighted by the company's CEO, Irina Nordman, in her speech.
– The new site finally brings all of Vesihuolto’s operations together, which is a positive renewal for us. Even though Vesihuolto has a long history in Halinen, in the future we will be able to create new traditions here in the Science Park and Itäharju. AkvaCity is centrally located, and for us, it is a symbol of a new era and new ways of working that also raises the profile of the entire area.
A greeting from the construction company Jatke was delivered by Petri Reunanen, CEO of Western Finland.
– AkvaCity is a wonderful project for Jatke, and it is great that we get to be involved in its realization. Construction is on schedule and will be ready in the spring, Reunanen continued while thanking the builders.
During the event, a metal cylinder was cast into the floor for future generations. Inside, there is information about the construction project, current coins, and the day's Turun Sanomat newspaper to capture the spirit of the time. The cylinder also contained a map extract of the area, a Vesihuolto customer magazine, a 1952 edition of Turun Sanomat reporting on the construction of the Halinen facilities, and a bottle containing water directly from Halinen.
The architectural design for AkvaCity was done by the architecture firm Sarc + Sigge. The contractor for the project is Jatke Länsi-Suomi Oy. The building will be constructed in accordance with the LEED v4 Platinum level, which means that the property’s environmental impact and energy consumption are aimed to be minimized throughout its lifecycle.
After lunch, the guests had the opportunity to take a tour of the AkvaCity construction site. The event featured a performance by singer-pianist Eveliina Jaatinen.
The progress of the project can be followed via a site camera broadcasting live footage.
