Can there be too much color? The street level of BioCity gets a new look with colorful window decals

Last week, colorful window decals appeared on the windows of an empty commercial space at the street level of BioCity, catching the attention of those moving through the Science Park. What is this all about?

– The windows of the empty commercial space were bleak to look at, and the colorful windows create a great contrast with the dark facade of BioCity. Why leave the windows empty when we can use them to bring more color to the area, reflects Communications Specialist Mirka Mäkiö from Teknologiakiinteistöt.

The colorful window decal did not happen by chance. We have wanted to create distinctive outdoor spaces in the Science Park, and rainbow colors can also be seen on the rainbow stairs located next to the main entrance of Visitor Centre Joki, which serve as a good landmark when arriving at Joki.

The BioCity window decals are clearly visible when approaching from Tykistökatu and the Itäharju side. Furthermore, they bring life to the Science Park's shared courtyard, Jussinaukio. Thus, the colorful windows not only cover the view into the empty commercial space but also create a notable landmark.

– In the Science Park, we have wanted to bring something interesting to see where people move. Using colors is an effective way to attract attention and stand out from the crowd. The colorful window decals of BioCity are a great example of how colors can make an empty space interesting, says Mirka.

Why leave the windows empty when we can use them to bring more color to the area?

Turku Science Park is known for its distinctive spaces and art that we wanted to make accessible to everyone moving in the area. Art can be found in the common areas of the buildings, and additionally, over 50 works of art decorate the area's parking garages.

The new street-level coloring has received praise from those in the Science Park, and it also attracted interest during the Science Park's best party. The decal is not a permanent solution, however, as we want the street-level space to be in use.

– Although colors can be visually appealing, it is important that the space is put to good use. The colorful decals can remain in place until a new operator is found for the space.
