Construction of the GeneCity pharmaceutical factory, delivered by Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt for 3PBiovian, was completed at the end of December. In January, the first employees will move into the stunningly beautiful premises.
What does the finest pharmaceutical factory in Finland look like? Like GeneCity, built in Itäharju, Turku – at least if you ask Miika Tuominen, Construction Director at Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt. And it’s no wonder, as the three-story GeneCity is as beautiful as a jewel, a building that is simultaneously understated and impressive, located by Helsinginkatu on Teollisuuskatu.
“GeneCity continues the design language of InfraCity and serves as a gateway building when arriving in Turku from the direction of Helsinki. It is perfectly suited for this purpose, as I would dare to claim that it is the finest pharmaceutical factory in Finland,” Tuominen praises.

The building was designed by the renowned architectural firm Sarc + Sigge, who were also behind InfraCity. Behind the facade of glass and ceramic tiles are office spaces spread over three floors, and during the spring, a cleanroom—the heart of the property—will be built for the production of biological medicines.
“The actual construction contract was completed on schedule and within budget on December 31st. Now, work continues with the implementation of the cleanrooms. The project will be completed in the spring, after which the user will continue building the pharmaceutical factory’s process technology.”

The interior of GeneCity uses a lot of oak veneer and neutral color tones. The ground floor lobby is dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows, and a pressed tile that repeats natural stone tones creates a sophisticated atmosphere. Oak veneer on interior walls and cabinets adds warmth to the space. The room’s eye-catcher is a three-dimensional acoustic wall glowing in various shades of blue.
“The level of detail and quality of work in this building are truly high.”
The office spaces on the second and third floors offer views far across Turku, as the nearest buildings are relatively far away on the other side of Helsinginkatu. The bright spaces are connected by a staircase, which increases a sense of community and spontaneous encounters between people.
“The level of detail and quality of work in this building are truly high. The whole is crowned by facade lighting solutions that change according to weather conditions.”
