The Appearance-Based Society – Why do men benefit more from their appearance in working life than women?

Joki Forum brought together the science park community to explore the significance of appearance in working life and all interpersonal interactions. The speaker at the event was Outi Sarpila, Professor of Sociology at the University of Turku. Sarpila has led a research team that, among other things, authored the book The Appearance-Based Society – External Appearance as Capital in 21st Century Finland.

In her work, Sarpila studies appearance and inequality. Her research shows that men benefit more from an attractive appearance in their careers. For women, however, attractiveness can sometimes work against them, as the stereotype that a beautiful woman cannot be intelligent still persists in the workplace today. Although women spend significantly more time and money on their appearance on average than men, a style that is too polished can be perceived as too formal, especially in the case of women.
